Transitions

Dean Moore

This month commences a significant transition in my life and the life of RBC, as I step down from the position of Senior Pastor. Transitions are always difficult, yet they are part and parcel of life. All through our life we make transitions – from childhood to adulthood, from one job to another, from singleness to marriage and back to singleness. Transitions are important if we are to grow and progress and mature. And if we are to transition effectively it is important to make those transitions with someone who knows about them: Jesus.

Jesus understands the stress and the fear associated with life’s transitions and, most importantly, He can help you navigate them.
There were a number of transitions throughout Jesus’ life. His first miracle, His baptism, but perhaps the most important and heart wrenching time of transition was the “Garden of Gethsemane.” After Jesus had finished eating the Passover meal with His disciples, He led them to the Mount of Olives. To a garden, that is named Gethsemane.

Jesus knew He was about to die, to be that atonement for humankind and to face the biggest transition of all – from life to death to life again. So what did He need to help Him navigate that transition? He needed prayer, He needed to know that He was in Gods Will and He needed the support of His friends.

“Then he said to them, ‘My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” (Matthew 26:38, NIV)

Everyone who goes through a transition, needs friends who can keep watch. Sometimes we need them to be close, sometimes at a distance, but regardless, we need to know they care. And if Jesus, God’s Son, needed the strength of His friends, then what makes us think that we can handle it on our own? If Jesus, in His humanness, knew He would be stronger with their support, what makes us think we have the strength to take on the world by ourselves? Shouldn’t we expect to need our friend’s strength in times of trouble? Shouldn’t we want their prayers, their presence during the difficult times? Doesn’t it make sense that we need their strength, their support, their insight as we face the transitions of life?

With Jesus’ friends praying nearby Jesus prayed.

Matthew captures the moment this way;
Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, ’My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.’”
(Matthew 26:39, NIV)
